In the Lakota language, Wo Nagi refers to the spiritual essence of food.
Nestled among the gently rolling hills of South Eastern Saskatchewan, White Bear First Nation is a member of Treaty 4 territory and the home of Wo Nagi and its owner, Chef Tammy Maki, a distinguished, Red Seal Pastry Chef and proud Nakota Sioux. A survivor of the Sixties Scoop, she was raised in a Finnish family in Sudbury, Ontario, a background she affectionately refers to as "Finndigenous." Chef Maki's culinary journey led her to serve as an Executive Pastry Chef in esteemed establishments across Canada. In 2018, she founded Raven Rising-Global Indigenous Chocolates, an e-commerce venture celebrated for its artisanal chocolates focused on Indigenous ingredients sourced worldwide. Her innovative approach earned her the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada's Extraordinary Female Entrepreneur Award in 2024.
Building upon her success, Chef Maki has launched Wo Nagi-Culinary & Consulting, a platform dedicated to Indigenous culinary consulting, specialty food events, and corporate tasting experiences. Through Wo Nagi, she continues to honor and share Indigenous culture and cuisine, offering workshops and speaking engagements that reflect her commitment to culinary excellence and cultural education.
